Demolition of 19th century farmhouse a 'sad irony': councillor

Posted Jul 27, 2010 By Charelle Evelyn

EMC News – Although disappointing, the demolition of a 19th Century Orléans farmhouse to make way for a modern condo development could not have legally been avoided, according to the ward representative
“I didn’t have any ability to intervene on a demolition permit,” said Innes Coun. Rainer Bloess.
The Gauthier house, on Innes Rd. was torn down July 15 and 16 to the irritation of the councillor and local historians.
He said he received an email on July 15 about the demolition of an Innes Rd. duplex but that it did not immediately click that it was this particular property.
Coun. Bloess said that he had been to the house and spoken with the owner a couple of years ago.
“At the time he had no indication of selling,” he said.
The fact that the building was torn down in a year when the area is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Orléans parish is a “sad irony,” Coun. Bloess said. “We need to be more conscientious and in tune with the historical significance of buildings.”
