From left, Cumberland Community Association president Rebecca Dufton, vice-president Jim DeVille and Coun. Stephen Blais gather on Jan. 6 to officially unveil the new winter banners lining Old Montreal Road in Cumberland village.
Thanks in part to a grant from the City of Ottawa, Cumberland's main street has a shiny new set of banners that will adorn the village year-round.
"We had this idea to enhance the streets during the wintertime," said Rebecca Dufton, president of the Cumberland Community Association.
Banners featuring designs reminiscent of the farmers' market have been installed seasonally for the past five or six years, but when those banners began to look weathered, the community association made plans to upgrade.
That's where the city came in. With its new Rural Community Building Grant Program, the city provided $7,000 towards the total cost of $11,000 to design and produce new summer and winter banners for the village's main street.
That money pays for more than 20 banners and better hardware to install them on light fixtures and ensure they don't flap around in the wind and become tattered.
"It's certainly not something we could have done on our own," Dufton said.
The winter banners, which feature a cabin, a snowflake and a snowman, were installed within the last two weeks, said Cumberland Coun. Stephen Blais. The new summer banners, which have designs focused on produce and flowers, will replace the winter banners when the weather gets warmer.
Dufton said the banners are a source of pride for people in the neighbourhood.
"It makes them feel proud to live here," she said. "It suits the community."
