As a cannabis user, it’s nice to know if you can consume your favourite Canadian CBD oil anytime, anywhere, if possible. However, it might not be possible in some scenarios, especially if you are travelling. This might cause problems since some methods of public transportation may or may not allow specific items.
Sure, you might be able to avoid this problem if you have a private car. But how are you going to deal with international travel? Even if CBD oil in Canada is mostly accepted, we all know both air and sea travel can be strict.
CBD Oils on Planes
That depends. It’s allowed if it’s also legal in the place where you’re travelling to. If it is allowed in that place, there’s a catch. For example, you are only restricted to the ones approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It has also been announced and approved by the Transportation Security Association (TSA), so you won’t have to explain to airport authorities about the legality of your CBD oil as long as it is FDA-approved.
What made it possible?
That is all possible thanks to the compliance made by TSA to the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018. The said act removed certain hemp and cannabis derivatives that had been allowed by the FDA. Those with extremely low counts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are removed from the Controlled Substance Act (which strictly regulates drugs).
The former act now recognizes the medical usage and benefits of hemp-derived CBD products including CBD oils. Products approved under the said act must only contain less than 0.3% THC overall. It is done so to avoid the component that can make a person “high”.
Rules and Regulations of TSA for CBD Oils
Do take note, however, that whenever you are headed during your flight, you will be subjected to different state laws. Having proper knowledge about TSA’s rules and regulations on CBD-related products can help you get out of legal trouble.
According to TSA, you can bring CBD-related products via carry-on bags or checked bags/luggage. Again, as mentioned earlier, all items must have less than 0.3% THC level on a dry weight basis, which is approved by the FDA.
You may check with the FDA regarding how the dry weight basis works. TSA will only be in touch with authorities (local, state, or federal) once they have suspected that you have violated this ruling.
It’s important to stay updated to avoid any mishaps.
In Short
To keep it simple and short: yes, you can bring CBD-related products on planes, as long as their THC levels are less than 0.3%. The FDA must approve that percentage and pass their dry weight basis. Anything more than that can get you into serious trouble.
However, make sure that CBD is regulated where you’re going. Some states or provinces are stricter than others. Furthermore, CBD is still illegal in most countries. Always read about the rules and be updated.
